WOW! What a great analogy this thread is,
For 'society'! Start off with an initial post, posing a fairly simple concept; that the 'Rule of Law' is a fallacy, of fiction.
And the discussion quickly devolves into a discussion involving religion, and God, and each person, convinced they have been 'vouchsafed' the ultimate 'truths', is yelling past the other, and only reading anothers post so they can dispute it, and get back to re-posting THEIR version of the 'ultimate' truth.
Doesn't this thread demonstrate very clearly WHY your suggestion, MBrown, that we can simply solve these problems by gaining agreement, and education, won't work?
The 'problem' IS 'human naure'.
Its like thecouple/family, that move every couple of years, and each 'new' place they move to, they are unhappy, (hence the next move).
"Where ever you go, there you are!"; They are 'unhappy', because whats making them unhappy moves WITH them.
I am no different; my 'truth' that I invariably fall back on is that 'we', collectively have developed a terminally flawed system, civilisation, and we keep on trying to figure out a way to 'make it work', cause the idea of tearing the whole thing down and starting over again, (and doing it differetly this time) is something most find,...unappealing, to say the least.
And so we keep trying to find ways to prop the system up, to keep it going.
And, the real flaw is with US, so there IS no 'fix', no 'magic bullet' that will 'make things right'. "yeah, but if we could just,.." Yes, but we ain't going to 'just', so thats a 'pipedream'.
If we could just address corruption, (yes, but we ain't). Ifwe could all just 'get along', (yes, but we ain't). If we could just educate people, (yes but we ain't).
Yes, but if we could just put GOD first in our lives, and live according to HIS teachings, (yes, but you guessed it,....we ain't!). Instead wemake religion or science our GOD, and argue and even kill people based on OUR perception of him or it.
By the way, still 'slogging' thru Darwins theory, but one thing that occurred to me;he is always described as, or called a 'Naturalist'; and in his writings, he gives credit to other 'naturalists', as well as Botanists, Biologists, Geologists, etc. My point is, while these 'other' scientific fields still exist today, there are no 'naturalists' any more; so, Darwin was a scientist, in a fieldof study which is now,....EXTINCT!
"Survival of the fittest", indeed!Jim

At least at the bar they tell you what they are after and if someone wants to smoke some grass and get laid they are not hiding their motivation.
