  • Best batteries for DIY electric bike.

*sorry I didn't paid attention to the forum section i'm posting this thread. Please moderator move it to the more appropriate section. Many thanks

Hello guys. For a long time I've been thinking in building myself an electric bike. However I still don't know much about the batteries.

Lets say for instance that I'll use 48V motor.

Which are best types, where is best to buy?

    Thanks

    Hi,

    Lots of good info here

Fast Electric Bike - How to Build a 50MPH Electric Bike

    Endless-sphere.com • Index page

Its not as easy as just picking a battery and off you go unfortunately.

How fast do you want it to go? How far? How knowledgeable are you with electronics and hi energy density batteries? Budget? Bike used? Do you want to keep the gearing functional? Or just going for an easy install (hub motor).

When you can answer these questions then you will be ready to pick a motor, and then the appropriate batteries.

    Regards

      I like this Thread...

      Hello Lowriderzzz,

I believe this Thread could easily stay here, unless there is already another side dedicated to EV's...and if so, I will follow it there.

Here are a few enthusiast about Electric Riders...and Motorcycles, including myself.

I have an electric rider that I have made some changes to it...it can go up to 65 MPH, it is a 2010...and by now it is considered "obsolete"...cause of all the new stuff that has come out...

Lowrider, just like Ren mentioned, you need to put together some kind of sketch based on what you have already and what you want, and how much $ you are gonna spend. Basically, an Electric Bike have only like four or five main components that should work together as a team, meaning in complete synchronicity.

1-Power Train, Motor Type, Controller and Throttle handle.
      2-Batteries, BMS and Charger
      3-Cluster -Gauges and Sensors.
4-Accessories (lighting, turn signals, horn, and DC/DC Converter)

I know some places you could by all this stuff, even a complete "Rolling Chassis" (No Motor, No Batt, No Controller, no BMS, No charger, etc, just lights, cluster, accessories and full body) and assemble it yourself choosing all different configurations...but it is not cheap if you want a high performance bike.

Related to Batteries, if you are looking for "State of the Art", are the LiPoFe Battery Pack...plus BMS and Chargers, if BMS is an Active one it will control balancing as well as draw distribution while driving...it will protect your batteries life.

Batteries are rated by the Amps Hours they could provide...a 100 AH/72V Full Pack Lithium Ion Assembly (plus BMS+Charger) you are looking like around 5000.00 USD

Of course you could go cheaper with Lead Acid and 48V like you want...they are too heavy...it will be a slow bike and charge will not last too long...depending how you drive it...and what kind of money you put into Regeneration Controllers, etc, etc.

I also have a Honda CBR 900 RR that I am gonna take all the "Gas Farting and Leaking" components from it...and make it Electric...

      Regards

Yeah And when I think about it what better testing ground for alternative energy devices . Here is the bare bones of the principle of operation and a photograph of Leon Hatems Bike .. (or at least the drive) It was noted long ago by Leon that identical magnets are much stronger in attraction than in repulsion . That is quite easily proved and here is being demonstrated by a simple experiment on you tube.

Leon took this simple and obviously undeniable principle you have just watched and multiplied it many times with identical magnets.

Now stick a little battery and a motor on that (If you actually need one).

Regarding the questions: how fast - about 80 - 100 km/h (like 50-70 mph) not more for now. How far - about 100km 150km distance would be acceptable.
How knowledgeable am I. Well I have knowledge in electronics - i used to study in technical university. I know how to connect it and however I'm not much antiquated with the batteries themselves - acid vs LI etc. I have few friends more knowledgeable too that could probably assist me if I doubt something.
Budget - for now I have $3k but I'm working so more income will come. Hopefully until summer 2014 I could build it. I have some materials also - like steel rods for chassis, and some gears.

I'd prefer a non hub motor, so I could make changes of upgrades with time.

This guy has done something similar to what would I like, however he uses a hub motor.

Here is the project described in detail.

Nice discovery I never knew that.

Do you have a video regarding the picture posed on how this actually operates.

Do you know if there are such magnetic motors on the market already ?

            Thanks.

Hi lowrider Not sure if its really what you need to be looking at, I made a small one of these things (proof of concept really) .. and started a a thread on the subject It of course got immediately bombed by nay sayers and the inevitable shouts of scam ect (It would that's their job)That aside yes you see on this thread that many have systems and they are operating in various countries . And No as things stand at the moment this would never be allowed to be manufactured commercially.

I can and did work with that and so have all the rest can't you ? The fact that the scribblers have got it wrong is a total irrelevance and nothing to do with making your bike a bobby dazzler!

                This is most interesting.

I would have thought that the attraction just above the "horizon" would match and balance the attraction just below it and there would be no overall force.

Unless a triangular wedge of shielding mu-metal were to be installed just above the "horizon" to damp down that effect and create a resultant force or torque.

Has Leon done any bench tests with power in and power out?
                .

                  .
yeah that happens quite a lot to me ! . I often find what I thought might happen in a dream has nothing to do with what actually happens in practice. Luckily people do actual hands on experiments like the guy on you tube and Leon. So as you see Mu metal, triangular or otherwise is not a requirement, you just think it should be.
If you research Hatem devices you'll discover plenty of power in /out stuff . Not by Leon however he's got more sense . However here's some video of one of the many replications but with some meters attached It should give you a rough indication of the COP>1 of a simple one rotor experimental machine.

obviously the prime mover and alternator need to be very efficient try and do this with a standard car alternator and off the shelf motor and it'll be a fail.

                    more please

                    Thanks Duncan,
This is very interesting and I want to replicate this.

Please keep it going, first time to learn attraction is stronger than repulsion.

I've spent countless hours and have many magnets to work with. This may be what we need. No wonder the Chinese are trying to control the magnet market.

                    More please sir Duncan,

Here is the same video on youtube

Looks really nice, but I have few noob questions.

How much and what electrical consumer i could power with a device like this on the video.

What amortization does it will have if I let it run all day and all night long so it can power lets say a laptop or something else all the time ? I guess I'll need to only change its axis bearing since the magnets don't touch.

I heard the big one (with the 5 generators that Hatem made makes whole lots of noise.... Am i going to keep my neighbors awake. )

And one more question. What exact size of the ring Neodymium magnets is he using?

Btw, people in the yahoo answers engineering section are debunking it.
